3/11/12 Word of the Week = SERENDIPITOUS

Each week Barbara and I take turns picking the "Word of the Week". Well this week it was my turn and I chose the word last weekend. For some reason this word "Serendipitous" kept popping into my head. Truth be told I really didn't even know the definition of the word. I had to actually look it up in the dictionary before I decided what would be an appropriate picture or subject to post. The definition is; chance, accidental, coincidental, lucky, fluky, fortuitous; unexpected, unforeseen.

This could not apply more to our pug Virgil. Let me tell you his story. We rescued Virgil last September. My husband and I already had a 3-year-old yellow lab "Brady" and had previously had two dogs prior to him. We had decided we never wanted two dogs again. We felt they are too much work, are too expensive and there is too much jealousy between them.

Last September my daughter and her husband came down to visit with their dog Harry (a chocolate lab) so we could take the two dogs to a "Dog Fair" at the next town over. The Fair had all kinds of little exhibits and events for the dogs to take part in. While we were there we ran into an old friend of ours who used to have a Pug. We asked her how her dog was doing and she told us it had passed away. She said instead of getting another dog she was now doing "Pug Rescues" and she happen to have 3 with her that day. I have never really been attracted to Pugs. I've always been a big dog person. We certainly were not in the market for a second dog. We were very happy with our one dog family. So while my husband continued to talk to our friend I ventured over to the pen that held the three pugs. There were two that came running forward right away. There was a third, little one that just sat very quietly over on the edge. I looked at him and he looked at me with the sweetest little face. I started to talk to the boy standing there watching over the dogs and asked him some questions. I then asked if I could pick up the little pug. The dog was boney, covered in eczema, filthy dirty and his nails were disgustingly long. But when I picked him up there was something about him that just screamed LOVE! I held him and he nuzzled me and that was it! I asked the boy some further questions about his temperament. I then walked over to my husband and friend, with dog in arms and said, "I am adopting this dog!" My husband said "No you're not!" I said "I am adopting this dog!" and the rest is history.

Because our friend knows us and where we live she let us take him home that day. She gave us his medical history and print out from her vet. We left and immediately took him to get his nails trimmed and gave him a flea and oatmeal bath. We then had our vet check him out. Fortunately he had no serious physical problems. Over the next couple of months his eczema completely cleared up. We got his nails back to a normal length by having them trimmed every three weeks and he has plumped up.

He snorts and snores. He snuggles and licks. He's partly blind and deaf. But he is an incredible love and it is the best thing that we have ever done. Oh… and my husband is now thrilled we brought him home! It was totally FORTUITOUS, LUCKY, ACCIDENTAL, BY CHANCE, TOTALLY FLUKY, UNEXPECTED AND UNFORESEEN that this happened. It was SERENDIPITOUS but absolutely meant to happen for all of us! Even Brady loves him and they have become fast friends!

It's amazing how the same sky can have limitless colors depending upon the number of clouds, the time of day and the height of the sun or moon. The picture above and below were both taken last October on different days at sunset on Mount Desert Island in Maine in the exact same spot. In the photo above the sun had already sunk below the horizon and for every five minutes that passed the sky became more vibrant orange. It was truly amazing! The shot below was taken about 10 minutes before the sun set on a different night.

Below is a picture of the "Snow Moon" as it was rising over the Cape Cod Canal behind the Sagamore Bridge. The moon was actually a vibrant orange and huge. It cast an unbelievable bluish purple color across the sky.

These three pictures are all taken at sunrise over the Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts looking at the Sagamore Bridge.

The variation in color in the three skies is just amazing! We really do see some beautiful  sunrises and sunsets on the east coast.

I can't attest to everywhere else but on a consistent basis I must say the skies here will never disappoint you!

The project is called "In The Picture". We set our own personal goal for the number of pictures within a year we are going to take. I am aiming for "52" or "1" per week. She will post a new area of the body, subject or theme to focus on the first Friday of each month and then we Link up our pictures with everyone else on the last Friday of the each month. This will be a challenge and fun as I find taking a picture of myself has always been uncomfortable! Anyone else who might feel inclined to join the project (it's free) can go to the following link for details: Urban Muser Blog - "In The Picture"

MARCH 2012 - THEME #1 - "Black & White"
3/9/12

Yesterday on Cape Cod the temperature reached the mid-sixties but so did the winds. The sun was out and so tucked up on my deck out of the worse of the wind I sat for an hour and enjoyed the rays. It was so nice to feel the warmth on my face! I know I shouldn't and it's bad for me but I love the sun! It felt so wonderful and it's amazing how the sun just lifts your spirit. After feeling like a mole all winter I thoroughly enjoyed sitting there with my little Pug Virgil on my lap and by yellow Lab Brady at my side. We all enjoyed the time completely!

The juxtaposition in landscapes that makes up Mount Desert Island in Maine is amazing. On the one hand you have the amazing coastline that completely surrounds the Island. Then you have the quaint fishing villages, Bar Harbor being one that dot the shoreline. In the middle is Acadia National Forest, which in October when we visited is absolutely beautiful with vibrant foliage. Just outside of Bar Harbor the road is lined with huge old mansions originally built at the turn of the century by the very rich that used to escape the long hot summers of New York and Boston. Well worth the long drive this island will not disappoint!

On Cape Cod in the Town of Mashpee there is a wonderful outside mall called "Mashpee Commons". The mall is built to look like an old New England town. Over the years the mall has continued to expand and now it covers four blocks. There is every type of clothing, novelty, jewelry, shoe, dish, specialty & gift, book, cigar, kitchen, pet and some high-end chain stores. There are all kinds of restaurants, a Starbucks plus a movie theatre. Beginning in the spring right up through Christmas on the weekends there is events being held at the commons in the outside areas and you can barely find a spot to park. The place is jammed with people. It is a wonderful spot to go on a nice day and walk around. There really is a smattering of wonderful shops to poke around in and places to eat even a Tea Shoppe with bakery items. If you're ever in the area where Route 151 and Route 28 in Mashpee converge make a point of stopping for a visit!

3/4/12 Word of the Week = OPPORTUNITY
For the life of me I could not figure out what I was going to pick for this word. Barbara picked the word for this week and it was a tough one. I searched my archives of pictures and came across this picture of a bee inside a rose. I suppose you can interpret it one of two ways. Either it was my opportunity at getting the shot while the bee was in the rose OR it was the bee taking the opportunity of getting the nectar from the rose. Either way this is my choice for the Word of the Week "Opportunity"!

FEBRUARY 2012 - THEME #2 - "WRITE ON" - To use some words in your self portrait either literally right on my body or by adding text to my photo during post-processing, share a message, a word, or a quote that means something to you!
3/2/12
I picked the word "Curls" because as you can see I have a thick, full head of hair that is very wavy and full of curls! Most of my siblings have thick full hair which we get from my mother. Although her hair at 85 its still very thick and full it has always been bone straight. I think we get the waves and curl from my father. Unfortunately he was not blessed with a bountiful head of hair. And so my theme and word are "Curls".

On Cape Cod in the Town of Sandwich is a little bakery called MacKillop’s on Route 130 headed towards the Town of Mashpee.

Sandra Smith is the owner and the bakery is actually in the front of her house. She with the help of her friend Ellen both very friendly, sell the typical delicious baked goodies, which are absolutely delicious.
My favorites are enormous cinnamon rolls and lemon cake. I always stop in on Friday mornings for coffee and a sweet after dropping my dogs off at doggie daycare.
But what is beyond phenomenal and probably the BEST I have ever had anywhere are her MEAT pies. She makes Shepherds Pie, Beef Marsala Pie, Pork Marsala Pie, and Chicken Pot Pie. They come in two sizes, large and small. The large is $15.00 and feeds 4 people. The small is $8.00 and sufficiently feeds 2 people.

Sandra simmers the meat and fixings all day long. It literally is a home cooked meal. I always have two in my freezer at all times. When in a pinch I pull one out frozen, throw it in the oven at 400 degrees and cook it for an hour. HEAVEN on a plate!!! I cannot emphasize enough how it is well worth the stop and stocking up on a couple of pies. But let me warn you it must be early because she sells out of them fast and does not mass-produce them. So they sell quickly!!! MacKillop’s Bakery in Sandwich the best meat pies anywhere!!!

Each Sunday we will post the "WORD OF THE WEEK" and our individual interpretation of the word via two separate photos on our blog "OUR WORD VIEW"! Please feel free to link up a photo with your interpretation of the "WORD OF THE WEEK" with the "LINK UP" button. If linking to a blog we would prefer you link to the Post the photo is in and not the Home page. Join our FLICKR group and add your photo interpretation of the word and join in the discussion!

2/26/12 Word of the Week = Strength

Sagamore Bridge, Cape Cod Canal, Massachusetts
Living on Cape Cod we only have two sources of access to and from the Cape, the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge. During the summer months beginning with Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day the amount of traffic/weight these bridges carries is unimaginable. The Sagamore Bridge and Bourne Bridge were both finished in 1935. I can assure you when these bridges were built the engineers never imagined that vehicles would be so large and the traffic so heavy. The strength that these two bridges have is astounding to carry the loads that they do. Rest assured the Army Corp of Engineers routinely maintain both. I do not believe a Fall/Winter goes by that one of the two bridges is not being worked on. Which although an inconvenience given the fact that they are our only means to get onto the Cape should make us feel better!

I am participating in a project with my Blogger friend "Urban Muser" and other participants in which each month we post different self portraits.

FEBRUARY 2012 - THEME #2 - "WRITE ON" - To use some words in your self portrait either literally right on my body or by adding text to my photo during post-processing, share a message, a word, or a quote that means something to you!
2/24/12
I feel as though there is never enough time in the week to just relax. Between work, the house, my blog and photographs time is at a premium. To have a couple hours to just lay down, turn everything off and unwind is nearly impossible but it does happen - on the rare occasion!

In Massachusetts on the north west side of the Cape Cod Canal is an area called Buzzard’s Bay. Spanning the canal is an old railroad bridge, which is still in use today. Other than the marine gray color it actually is architecturally a great example of an old bridge.

At the site there is also a big beautiful gazebo.

The original train station still remains standing and is a visitor center today.

Approximately one mile up the road is the epitome of a small maritime church. Over the door is a figurehead of a boat with a fisherman in it. I have always loved the simplicity of this church with the pop of the bright red door and the contrasting yellow of the fisherman! It is such an appropriate figurehead for the area.

More from the day my husband and I spent out on Sandy Neck Beach, Barnstable, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. We packed a lunch, hopped in his four wheel drive truck and headed out on miles and miles of unspoiled barren beach! I just can't get enough of the sun, sand, water and dunes! They are absolutely gorgeous especially at this time of year because you are quite often the only one there!
My wonderful companion and chauffeur. Always with me and patient while I take my photos. Driving around with me while I snap away. Here he is deflating the tires before we head out onto the beach!

Looking Back at the past week...

1) I wish I had….. not eaten that decadent Bailey’s Fudge cake. Ugh!!!

2) I made….. no dinners during the past seven days! Woo hoo! Yippee!

3) My dogs….. were my protectors during my husbands absence!

4) I’m grateful….. for my husbands safe return.

5) To relax….. I curled up on the couch in front of the wood stove.

6) My husband….. was gone for five days.

7) I was happy….. to spend time with some close friends.

8) I have a feeling of accomplishment….. that I humped firewood and made all the fires in the woodstove during the week.

9) I spent too much….. time on my computer my eyes were all blurry.

10) I took time to….. spend with my Mom.

And I look forward to….. an additional day off.

I know I have been posting many pictures of roses lately but the bouquet I bought my mother for Valentines Day has opened slowly and the blossoms have been unbelievable. What I have found so amazingly intriguing is the way the light reflects and beams on and through all the petals. In every single picture the flowers are totally different yet absolutely beautiful. If you're not a "flower" person you probably won't appreciate this but I for one certainly do! I hope you have enjoyed them!

2/19/12 Word of the Week = LIGHT
Light is so important in photography. It can completely change the mood of a scene. In the above picture I love how the sunlight coming through some of the petals of the rose makes them almost iridescent. In the upper left hand corner of the photo you can see the beams of light just streaming in against the dark background.

I just had to take a couple of pictures of the roses I bought my mother for Valentine's Day. They are so pretty and I absolutely love the color of them. Not your typical dozen red roses but that is what appealed to me. Such a wonderful reminder of spring!

2/17/12
I would like to say that I always do or start things with my "Eyes wide open" but more often I generally just "leap in head first". My husband has always been the planner in our relationship and I am the one who just plunges ahead and sees where the chips may land. It has always driven him crazy! I do go through life with my "Eyes wide open" but as they say I think much of the time I am looking through rose covered lens!

2/12/12 Word of the Week = TANTALIZING
As previously mentioned I have a killer sweet tooth so obviously I am going to be most attracted to something sweet! It just so happens that I love these donuts at Dunkin Donuts this time of year. They are a heart shaped, honey dipped donut and have a wonderful strawberry frosting with a custard filling. Luscious!!!! And of course they honor Valentine's Day! How appropriate! I'll have to make a couple of extra stops at DD before Wednesday when they pull them from the menu!
Check out our blog for Barbara's interpretation of the word and phenomenal recipe! http://ourwordview.blogspot.com/
